CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting early Wednesday in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

Police responding to reports of a person shot in the 5900 block of South Fairfield Avenue about 1:15 a.m. found the teen lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, Alfaro said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death early Wednesday.
