Teen charged after woman is shot in mouth in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood

A teen stood charged Thursday with shooting a young woman in the mouth in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood earlier this week.

Daniel May, 18, was arrested 10 minutes after police said he shot a 28-year-old woman in the mouth in an apartment in the 6700 block of South Crandon Avenue at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday.

Court documents said May is also accused of pistol-whipping the woman.

An arrest report indicated that officers responded to the Crandon Avenue apartment building for a person shot, and found a trail of blood leading to one apartment. Officers found May exiting a rear bedroom wearing only yellow boxer shorts, and were able to detain him.

May, of the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm, police said.

May appeared for a detention hearing in Cook County Criminal Court on Thursday. He was ordered detained until trial.

May has no prior criminal convictions, but he does have three prior arrests — in one of which the case is still pending.

He was charged in July 2025 with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and in March 2025 with assault and resisting arrest, but these charges were both dropped as the victim didn't show up in court, records show.

Also in March 2025, May was arrested on charges of obstructing identification. In this case, which is still pending, police were called to the 7700 block of South Wood Street after neighbors said armed young men were shooting a video on the block flashing guns, according to an arrest report. The block is an area known for gang conflict, the report said.

May was one of two people detained, and May initially claimed his was "Kevin H. Brown." But police conducted a leads inquiry that determined this to be false, and May later admitted he gave officers a fake name because was on probation, the arrest report said.
