Survey Of CPS Principals Shows 6 Out Of 10 Leave Within 5 Years
(CBS) -- A survey of Chicago Public School Principals says most of them are leaving the school system early and not necessarily in search of better pay, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.
Heather Anichini, CEO of the Chicago Public Education Fund, says the group's survey shows that six out of ten Chicago public school principals leave the district within five years.
"What that created is a city where we have half of our principals in their first three years," she said. "For us, that's a little worrisome in that the sense that for a principal to really get good at their job they have to get to year five."
Anichini says the reasons for leaving vary. She says money is fourth on the list of reasons why principals leave the system.
Higher up? Many principals feel there's too much bureaucratic paperwork and too many rules, or they don't have the resources or the training to perform parts of their jobs well.
Among the solutions? Give the principals more freedom and better help.
