Survey: Most Chicagoans Reluctant To Disconnect From Their Phone
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A recent survey found most people never really unplug from their smartphones.
According to a Bank of America survey, 73 percent of Chicago residents sleep with their smartphones, and 30 percent have fallen asleep with their phone in their hand. In addition, 38 percent said it's the first thing they reach for in the morning, and 58 percent check their phone at least once an hour.
Many of the people WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty spoke to on Michigan Avenue on Monday identified with those results.
"Oh yeah, way more than that," one woman said.
Another woman said her 19-year-old sister uses her phone all the time.
"All day, every night, every minute; taking selfies," she said.
One man said people are too reliant on their cell phones.
"I mean, you leave your cell phone at home, you're just lost, I guess," he said.
Not everyone WBBM spoke to was as bound to their phones. Some said they make a point to charge their device outside the bedroom at night.
"I use it mostly as a phone – surprise, surprise – and not too many people do," one man said.
