'Super Moon' Looms Over Chicago Sunday-Tuesday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Amateur astronomers or anyone who just wants to see something cool, should look to the sky, especially Monday morning.

WBBM's Bernie Tafoya reports, the moon is going to look bigger than usual to the eye. It will happen on Monday morning and at sunset Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evening.

It's an extra "super moon."

"This time, the moon is closest it's been since 1948 and it'll look slightly larger," said Adler Planetarium astronomer Larry Ciupik.

The moon, at its closest, will be a little under 222,000 miles from Earth at 7:21 a.m. Monday, according to NASA.

Ciupik says that because there'll be lower contrast with that full moon, you'll get a better view through the naked eye or binoculars than if you use a telescope.
