Summit High School Evacuated Due To Nearby Gas Leak

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A high school in southwest suburban Summit was evacuated Monday afternoon, after a gas leak near the school's campus.

Argo Community High School, 7329 W. 63rd St., was evacuated around 1:30 p.m., after a gas leak immediately east of campus, according to District 217 Supt. Kevin O'Mara. Students were sent home about half an hour later, after school buses were sent to the school to pick them up. The school's dismissal time normally is 3 p.m.

Parents who normally pick up their students were advised to meet their children on the north side of 63rd Street. Students were not being allowed back inside the building.

Students who drove to school and parked in either of two lots across the street from school were not being allowed to access or remove their vehicles until the gas leak is secured, and the area is deemed safe.

The fire department, police department, and Nicor Gas crews were on the scene.

All athletics and other after-school activities at Argo have been cancelled for the day.
