Suburban Mother Afraid She's Being Targeted By Son's Killers
(CBS) -- A year after her son was murdered, a south suburban woman still lives in fear. She's afraid two of his killers are targeting her.
Even though family and friends know who they are, they're still free. The victim's family wants to know why, reports CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.
It's been just over a year since Zedda Atkins' son was murdered. She says two girls and two guys were looking to rob someone and targeted her son, South Side promoter John "Fuzzy" Atkins.
Prosecutors say the women, Audreianna McNeil and Ladonna Curry, lured Atkins to a South Side gangway in August 2013. The women got back in the car, but the two men ambushed Atkins, forcing him to his knees and robbing him.
"He looked back and told him, 'man don't kill me. I got kids, don't kill me,'" Zedda said.
Prosecutors say McNeil and Curry know the men involved. Atkin's family says they even gave police their names but have yet to be apprehended.
Marc Lawson found Atkins body. A day later, he found a bullet and gave it to police.
"Police know who they are, neighbors know who they are," Lawson said.
Lawson, and Atkins family, are hopeful for an arrest. In the meantime, Zedda Atkins lives on the edge, and not just emotionally. She believes one of the killers came to her door recently. Dolton police confirm they've put patrols on her house.
"I'm always watching my back," she said.
Chicago Police will only say this is an open and ongoing investigation.
McNeil and Curry are charged with several crimes, including four counts of first degree murder and armed robbery. Both have pleaded not guilty.
