Suburban boys' basketball team gets ready to make history

Suburban boys basketball team heads to state

PALATINE, Ill. (CBS) -- A northwest suburban boys' high school basketball team was treated to a big sendoff Thursday.

The Palatine Pirates are headed to the IHSA state tournament for the first time.

The team bus pulled out of Palatine High School around noon Thursday with a police escort.

Community members and kids from neighboring schools gathered to cheer on the team as Palatine headed off to make history.

"Our kids have done a really good job all year of just kind of staying levelheaded, taking things in stride – and we've tried to get them to understand the magnitude of what they've been doing the last couple of weeks," said Palatine Head Coach Eric Millstone, "and how important it is, not just for them, but like I said, for everybody else around us."

Palatine takes on Normal in the state tournament on Friday afternoon in Champaign.
