Storms Swoop Into Chicago Area After Hot Day

(STMW) -- A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Chicago Saturday evening as powerful storms followed the day's stifling heat and humidity.

The warning was in effect for northeast Cook County until 7 p.m. as a line of storms extending from northwest suburban Des Plaines to the North Side of the city rolled in, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds could gust up to 60 mph, with quarter-size hail and torrential downpours that could cause flash flooding, the weather service said.

Forecasters urge people to take cover on the lowest floor of their buildings.
