Storms Blast Schaumburg, Other Suburbs

(CBS) -- Abrupt, explosive storms left damage in their wake in northwestern suburbs late Friday afternoon.

Schaumburg appeared especially hard hit, with hail, downed trees and branches and standing water, following thunderstorms the erupted over the region.

The village of Schaumburg said several streets were closed and urged motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded streets.

A.J. Bolano was in a pick-up truck when ice balls literally started falling from the sky.  "It's rock-size hail. I was scared to get out of the vehicle," he tells CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.

There were other concerns too, like a possible gas leak off Roselle Road.

Damage was widespread, but no injuries were reported in the village.

ComEd reported scattered outages across the Chicago area, affecting thousands of customers.
