CHICAGO (CBS) -- A powerful storm ripped off the roof on a west suburban apartment building, forcing authorities to evacuate residents.
On other western suburbs, several trees were ripped down, damaging cars and some homes.
ComEd crews quickly began to chip away at the outages. The number of customers without power dropped from 8,700 at 4:30 p.m. to 3,832 as of 6:30 p.m., most of them concentrated in a couple of small west and southwest suburban areas.
The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of 50 miles an hour in Burr Ridge. Police in Berwyn and Oak Park reported a number of trees down.
According to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, the roof at the Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments in unincorporated Willowbrook was damaged after high winds and rain rolled through the area on Tuesday afternoon.
"The roof is in my house," one storm damage victim told CBS 2's Brad Edwards.
The woman's son, told CBS 2 that he was inside the apartment when the roof fell in.
"It scared me so bad," he said.
There were no reports of any injuries.
