State's Attorney Asks For Special Prosecutor To Review Pravin Varughese Case
(CBS) -- The downstate prosecutor under fire from a suburban family for his handling of a death investigation has now asked for a special prosecutor in the case.
This is the case of 19-year-old Pravin Varughese - an SIU student from Morton Grove who was found dead a year ago.
His family believes a man who gave him a ride in Carbondale is responsible for his death.
But the state's attorney refused to prosecute that man, saying the autopsy results don't point to his guilt.
The Varughese family paid for their own doctor to look at those autopsy results - and his conclusions point to murder.
There's been quite a bit of back-and-forth between State's Attorney Michael Carr and the Varughese family and now Carr has asked for a special prosecutor and a judge has agreed.
Carr wrote in a press release: "I have no problem with my opinion being reviewed by other capable professionals."
