Squatting Along Chicago's Skyway Bridge: Monk Parakeets

(CBS) -- You've probably heard of Chicago's colonies of small parakeets.

WBBM's Mike Krauser found a very noisy group of them nesting on the Chicago Skyway toll bridge.

The noise can be heard at Avenue M along the Chicago Skyway.

High up in the bridge's ironwork, monk parakeets have built several large, communal nests.

They swoop down in groups, landing in nearby trees and at the right time of day create quite a racket.

They are not new to Chicago. Monk parakeets were first spotted in Hyde Park in the 1970s. Experts say the original parakeets were likely pets.

The non-native birds have since spread north to Wisconsin and east to Indiana.
