Squad Car Slams Into Tree In Garfield Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police sport-utility vehicle slammed into a tree after chasing a four-wheeler through Garfield Park Wednesday night.

Officers were responding to a call of shots fired just before 8 p.m. in the 100 block of North Homan Boulevard, along the eastern edge of the park, when they spotted a man driving an off-road vehicle through the park.

Police chased the man, believing he might have been the one with the gun, but witnesses disputed that.

"They couldn't catch him, so they obviously didn't see the tree, so that's pretty much what it was. They didn't see it, so they hit it. It could have been a child. Thank God that it wasn't," one woman said.

Both officers in the vehicle were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions were reported as stable.
