Spring Rains Leading To High Mold, Pollen Counts, Allergist Says

(CBS) -- Spring allergies are underway, and the rain hasn't been helping.

Allergy season in the Midwest usually starts around late March through late May as milder temperatures head our way, says Dr. Anju Peters, an allergist with Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Peters says mold and pollen counts are currently high due to the rain and she says whenever we have a mild winter, allergy season tends to start earlier.

For those seeking relief, she recommend over the counter medication and behavioral modifications.

The modifications include wearing sunglasses, not going out in the early morning hours when pollen counts are high, and changing clothes and showering when you return indoors.

Dr. Peters says if those steps don't help, it's time to see a doctor.
