South Elgin Basketball Player Claims He Was Assaulted By Rival Team Members

(CBS) -- A South Elgin High School basketball player claims he was assaulted by rival team members Friday night.

WBBM's Mariam Sobh reports the alleged attack sent him to the hospital.

The 16-year-old boy was allegedly approached by several Metea Valley players, according to Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli.

"It occurred apparently as he was getting into the team bus," Ferreli said. "Apparently, some of his teammates came to his aid. He went to an Elgin hospital and got three stitches above one of his eyes for a cut."

Ferrelli says because the hospital is a mandated reporter, they alerted police to the injuries after the boy had been treated.

A criminal investigation is underway and Ferrelli says they are working closely with school administrators to find those responsible. He also says they are looking to interview anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
