Some Schools Closed Thursday Because Of Cold

(CBS) – Some schools announced they would close Thursday, with temperatures expected to sink to single digits, but the Chicago Public Schools system was planning on business as usual.

"Our highest priority is the safety of students and staff, and we are closely monitoring the weather to help ensure that holding class is in the best interest of students," a CPS spokesperson said in a prepared statement Wednesday night.

"Based on the current forecast, school will be in session tomorrow, and multiple CPS departments are working to ensure schools are prepared for a safe and successful school day."

It was a different story for a number of suburban schools or districts that announced they would be closed Thursday.

The communities in which some schools are closing include Aurora in the western suburbs and Matteson in the south suburbs. A more complete list that will be updated can be found here. Some private schools in Chicago also planned to close Thursday.

Below-zero wind chills are expected Thursday.
