Some Christmas Shoppers Wait Until Very Last Minute

OAK PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- How late can you wait? That's the game some gift-givers played as they shopped for presents on Christmas Day.

CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports on Christmas, an Oak Park Walgreens became a procrastinator's paradise.

Lajena Miller searched for a gift card, but said she isn't a procrastinator.

"I work six days a week, so it's been really hard to get out," Miller said.

The Walgreens in Oak Park is open until 10 p.m. and because most other stores are not, the registers were humming.

Some were even buying Christmas cards on Christmas Day. Shopper Lou Shor admitted he didn't have a reason for waiting until the last minute.

It's the kind of delay that breeds deception, buying a toy for your kid and a card for your spouse.

As far as his wife and kid know, shopper Rich Burnowski, "…was going to get some coffee."

But explanations like lack of time don't cut it with Santa. While they're shopping, he's resting.

"Santa knows I love him," Miller said. "We'll do better next year."

Looking ahead, according to American Express, 64 percent of Americans say they plan to shop the sales the day after Christmas, spending an average of almost $200.
