Snowfall Creating Slick Conditions On Roadways
(CBS) --Snowfall Wednesday afternoon and evening is making the roads slick, creating havoc for cars.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports what started for the masses as a commute became a quest that seemed at times to head nowhere.
On slush slickened roads, salt trucks stuck like the rest and salty drivers moved at a snail's pace.
Some drivers were frozen in place after a fender bender near the merging of the Edens and the Kennedy.
"I was driving back from work from Waukegan and I have literally been in the car for three and a half hours," one commuter said. "This is the worst commute I have had probably in in three to four years.
In Woodstock, a Metra train hit a vehicle at a crossing along Lily Pond Road around 5 p.m. Police say the crash appears to be weather related.
The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation said is deployed its full fleet of 280 snow plows and salt spreaders to clear the main roads.
The weather was also creating problems at the city's airports. According to the Chicago Department of Aviation, 80 flights were canceled at O'Hare with other flights being delayed 15-30 minutes. Midway had 12 flights canceled with some delays. The department said deicing is the main reason for the delays.
