'Smash-And-Grab' Burglars Hit Schaumburg Jewelry Store

(STMW) -- Two suspects armed with hammers stole more than $400,000 in diamonds from a jewelry store Wednesday night in northwest suburban Schaumburg.

The suspects entered the Jared Galleria of Jewelry at 1700 E. Woodfield Rd. in Schaumburg about 8 p.m., Schaumburg Police Lt. Shawn Green said.

The suspects, males of unknown age, smashed the glass display cases and left the store with loose gem stones and other pieces of jewelry, Green said.

They fled in a waiting minivan, police said. The van, which had been reported stolen from Rolling Meadows, was later found empty in a nearby parking lot.

An initial inventory showed at least 63 loose diamonds taken, police said. The stolen diamonds are valued at $427,275.

The store was open at the time of the robbery, but police could not immediately say how mnay people were inside. No one was hurt.
