Small Plane Crashes On I-88 In Kaneville, Clipping SUV; Pilot Says He's OK

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A small plane crashed on westbound Interstate 88 near mile marker 102 in Kane County Monday afternoon when the pilot needed to make an emergency landing.

Chopper 2 crews on scene could see that one lane of traffic appeared to be open around 5 p.m.

The pilot spoke with CBS 2 by phone and said he was OK but did not want to talk to the media.

Police said the man suffered injuries that were not life threatning.

According to the FAA, the plane was a Knight-Wilcox Varieze aircraft, which is a fixed-wing, single-engine plane with two seats. It crashed about eight miles northwest of Aurora Municipal airport.

Illinois State Police said the aircraft took off from the Waukegan airport and was bound for Aurora, but the pilot reported having engine problems.

That's when the pilot tried to use the interstate as a safe place to land, but the plane's wing clipped an SUV.

Investigators said the driver was not injured and there was minor damage to the vehicle.

Kaneville firefighters responded to the scene and took the pilot to a local hospital.

The plane's owner is registered out of Wheaton.

Illinois State Police responded on scene, and the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
