5-month-old baby killed in South Shore shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 5-month-old girl was shot in the head Friday evening in South Shore and later died.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. in the 7700 block of South South Shore Drive, police said.

The baby, identified as Cecilia Thomas by the Medical Examiner's Office, was in a tan Chevrolet when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said.

The driver of the car made it to 71st Street between Crandon and Luella avenues about a mile and a half away and sought help.

The baby was rushed to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

It is unclear who else was inside the car with the baby at the time of the shooting, but a 41-year-old man was also shot in the incident. He was shot in the eye area and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

No one was in custody late Friday.
