Six-Year-Old Girl Shot In Gang Crossfire Back In Hospital

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The little girl who was shot in the back when she was caught in a gang drive-by shooting last week on the Northwest side is back in the hospital.

Six-year-old Jaylene Bermeo was re-admitted to Stroger hospital last night--less than two days after she was sent home--in stable but guarded condition.

She was recovering from a collapsed lung, having a bullet lodged near her heart and other injuries. Her grandmother told CBS 2 Susanna Song that Jaylene was again having trouble with her lung.

Jaylene was shot in the chest on June 6, while playing at her aunt's Logan Square home.

Police allege a 17-year-old boy was driving down the block when he opened fire on rival gang members, inadvertently striking the girl in the back.

He was charged as a juvenile with aggravated battery with a handgun.
