SIU Basketball Team Stranded On Bus On I-57

(STMW) -- The winter storm barreling across the Midwest has left the Southern Illinois University men's basketball team stranded aboard their team bus on Interstate 57 near downstate Champaign.

About 6:30 p.m., the team was headed back to Carbondale after finishing their game against the Illinois State University Redbirds in Normal, when the driver of the team bus pulled over on Interstate 57 due to poor visibility.

The bus -- carrying the entire team, members of the training staff and one coach -- was still on the interstate as of 11:20 p.m., said Tom Weber, Southern Illinois University's Assistant Athletic Director for Media Services. Other members of the coaching staff had driven separately.

Weber said a tow truck is expected to pick the bus up by midnight and taken the team to a nearby rest stop where they will spend the night.

The bus has enough fuel to keep running throughout the night, Weber added.
