Should Illinois Jettison Job Of Lieutenant Governor?
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A proposal to eliminate the post of lieutenant governor as an Illinois' constitutional officer is running into some questions and doubts in Springfield.
DuPage County State Sen. Tom Cullerton says eliminating the post would save the state more than $1.5 million a year.
Even some previous lieutenant governors have questioned the effectiveness of the position.
However, Chicago State Sen. Kwame Raoul says the debate changed when candidates for governor were allowed to choose their running mates.
Oak Park Democrat Sen. Don Harmon is concerned that having the attorney general succeed a departing governor could mean someone from a different party takes over.
After all, this state went through the impeachment of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The measure cleared a legislative subcommittee, but lawmakers expect tougher sledding ahead.
