Man Shot While Driving On Tri-State Tollway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An apparent road rage incident left a motorist injured on Monday after shots were fired along the Tri-State tollway, police said.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Robert Satkiewicz said the driver of a red Chevy Impala was driving north on I-294 near 163rd Street around 9:15 a.m., when he was shot.

The man was sent to Christ Hospital and was listed in stable condition. Satkiewicz said the man was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A child was also in the car, but was not injured, and is now with his mother.

The driver was interviewed by investigators.

"They're still investigating at this time. It appears that it was resulting from a road rage incident," Satkiewicz said.

The victim, whose name is not being released, had a traffic altercation with a minivan. The driver of the minivan subsequently fired into the red Chevy, striking the driver.

Investigators shut down two lanes of the tollway to look for shell casings and other potential evidence after the shooting.

CBS Chicago reported in August that there had been 26 shootings on Chicago area expressways this year.

There were 19 in 2014, and 16 in 2013.

Because of the increase in shootings, state, county and Chicago police are stepping up patrols on area expressways.

State police say the special details are helping, and officers have seized guns and ammo and arrested suspects including two men over the weekend.
