Teenager Shot Several Times In Torso In Austin Neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A teenage girl was shot several times Wednesday afternoon in the Austin neighborhood.

The victim, a 17-year-old girl was shot several times in the torso while standing outside around 2:14 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Gladys Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Police said the gunman was in a car.

Witnesses told CBS the young woman ran into a nearby apartment building after she was shot, possibly to get help.

A community member is upset that kids cannot even be outside without being at risk.

"It shouldn't be a death sentence sitting on the front porch," said community activist, Clifton "Booney" McFowler. "Apparently in my community that's become a norm, too much of a norm. Where our kids can't even be kids anymore because us as a community haven't come up with, don't want to work together to solve the problem."

Police do not have any suspects.
