(CBS) -- A motorist was shot on Interstate 57 late Tuesday afternoon on Chicago's South Side, prompting closure of the outbound lanes for more than three hours.

The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. at I-57 near Halsted, state police say.

State police say a male driver, 31, sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The victim said someone shot at him from a darkly colored passenger van, which continued travelling south.

Southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 8 p.m.

It's the third shooting on an expressway in Chicago this year, state police say.
