Man wounded in apparent road rage shooting near Union Station in Chicago
A man was injured Thursday morning in an apparent road rage shooting near Union Station in Chicago.
The 42-year-old man was standing outside in the 300 block of South Canal Street before 8:30 a.m., police said. The scene is about a block away from Union Station, the downtown hub for Amtrak trains and many Metra trains, and close to the Willis Tower and the construction site around the Old Post Office.
Police said he got into an argument with a man that became physical, and the second man shot him. The victim was shot once in the left leg, and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in good condition, police said.
The shooter drove off in a black sedan, police said. Sources told CBS News Chiago that, for reasons unknown, the victim kicked the suspect's car. The person then parked his vehicle near the construction zone, got out and shot the victim in the left leg.
A witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, heard the shooting as she was walking to work. She had just crossed the street on Van Buren.
"Not even moments after I got off the curb, right behind me, I heard a loud noise. I was hoping it was backfire of a car, but as I turned, the gentleman right behind me was down on the ground and I realized it was a shot," she said. "I feel for that poor man. I pray to God that he's OK and then obviously the woman standing next to him thinking that she had been hurt, but then caring about the man who had just fallen right beside her."
A construction worker at the site said he heard the shot and hit the ground, following their active shooter training.
"I really didn't see anything, I just heard the shot," Don Brown said. "I was down in the deck, so I stayed down. So we came up, did our active shooter protocol."
The witness said multiple people rushed to help.
"I was talking to dispatch and she was telling me, if someone has loose article clothing, if you can press the wound to apply pressure. And while she was saying that, this man out of nowhere and just came took the shirt off his back and applied pressure," the witness said.
Chicago police officers were seen in video of the scene in the aftermath. A white shirt was also seen on the sidewalk.
An investigation by Area Three detectives is ongoing.
