Shooting, crash leave 2 injured off Chicago's Magnificent Mile

Shooting, crash leave 2 people hurt in Gold Coast

Police early Tuesday were investigating a shooting and crash that left two people injured on Chicago's Near North Side, right along the Magnificent Mile.

Chicago police said at 9:27 p.m. Monday, a 22-year-old man was driving a red sedan when someone in a white sport-utility vehicle pulled up and fired shots near Chicago and Michigan avenues.

The car was struck by gunfire multiple times, but the driver was not injured, police said.

However, police said the driver of the red sedan lost control and hit a parked car, pushing it into a 52-year-old pedestrian.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman was walking in the area when she was shot in the thigh. Police said she was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where she is expected to recover.

The pedestrian hit during the incident was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital around the corner. She was reported in fair condition with leg injuries.

Video from the scene shows multiple damaged vehicles, including a red sedan, a black SUV, and a white SUV. The video also shows two bullet holes in a window of Stan's Donuts down the street at 750 N. Rush St.

A neighbor heard the gunfire before going down to see the crime scene.

"We took the elevator down, like, we're on a very high floor," said Erin McDougald, "and by the time we came down we were seeing the blue lights from the police."

Nathan Goodpasture is in Chicago from Kansas City. He described the moment he, his wife, and their three kids hid when they heard the gunshots.

"I wasn't sure if it was a car backfiring or anything like that," he said. "We kinda got in a huddle, and I wasn't sure if the commotion was coming up Michigan, so we sort of hid behind the pillar at Water Tower Place."

As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests were made. Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
