Sheriff Deputy's Young Son Kills Self With Officer's Gun

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in Yorkville are calling it a terrible tragedy--the apparent suicide of a very young boy.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, the boy, only 11 years old and a sixth grader, apparently shot himself in the head with his mother's service revolver at home on Tuesday morning.

She's a Kane County sheriff's officer.

It's unclear how he got access to the gun.

Sheriff Richard Randall says an internal investigation is underway into whether the mother violated rules about the handling and storage of her weapon.

The head of a suicide prevention service in Batavia says she's seeing ever younger children killing themselves, often because of bullying including emails and texts they can't escape.

She says younger children are less able to handle it.
