Shaw Calls On Mayor To Hire More Black Detectives
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayoral challenger and former Chicago alderman Bob Shaw has called for more diversity among the ranks of the city's police detectives.
WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Shaw, who two months ago announced he would run against Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the 2015 election, said there aren't nearly enough African-American detectives on the force.
He said Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy should rectify that.
"Many of these current detectives cannot ascertain information in many of these neighborhoods, so you need somebody that can identify with the people in the various neighborhoods to help solve some of these crimes," Shaw said.
Shaw didn't offer specifics on how to pay for more detectives, but said he's confident the city has the money.
"They've got money. They find money for everything else. They've got money for lights down here, all these lights. Where'd they get the money for the lights?" Shaw said while talking to reporters at City Hall.
He said there's enough dissatisfaction with Mayor Emanuel to give him a shot at winning the race.
Conservative talk radio host William Kelly and municipal consultant Amara Anyia also plan to run for mayor next year.
