Shake Shack Plans Second Chicago Location As First Begins Build-Out

CHICAGO (CBS) -- With construction just starting on Chicago's first Shake Shack, the wildly popular burger emporium is already planning a second down town location.

The second Shack will be located on the ground floor of a new hotel in the landmark Chicago Athletic Association building, on South Michigan directly across from Millennium Park. The building is currently undergoing a complete restoration.

CBS got a quick peek inside the River North construction zone, at the corner of Rush and Ohio. Nothing remains of the old Harley Davidson store, clearing the way for the build-out.

To help pass the time before the big opening, Shake Shack commissioned graphic designer Noah MacMillian to create these nifty sliding puzzles of iconic Chicago landmarks, while revealing images of Shake Shack's burgers, shakes and frozen custard.

MacMillian credited Tristan Hummel, curator for the Chicago Loop Alliance, for coming up with the concept and overseeing the installation of the project.

Here is MacMillan's favorite:

"Burgers and fries were a rare meal growing up. So when we did go out for fast food as a family, it became a special moment, and I always coveted the toy included with the meal," Hummel said in an email. "I wanted Shake Shack's façade to be an opportunity for the public to recall their fond family memories too.

"I made these puzzles really large so that their size could make the viewer feel smaller, the way they would have felt in relationship to a toy when they were a child."

The River North location is set to open in the Fall of this year.

The South Michigan Avenue location will open sometime in 2015.

Shake Shack, which was started in 2004 and has become a culinary hit in New York, faces stiff competition in Chicago, known for its array of top-notch burgers.

Their menu offers a variety of hamburgers, flat top hot dogs, fries and frozen custard.
