All Lanes Reopen On Kennedy Expressway

Updated 06/22/14 - 5:48 p.m.

(CBS) -- Lanes on the Kennedy Expressway reopened Sunday afternoon, as work is ahead of schedule for the second weekend of construction.

IDOT spokeswoman Jae Miller says crews made quick work of demolition on the old Ontario Street Bridge.

"They opened up the outbound Kennedy this morning just after 7:30 and reversibles are also open, which is much sooner than we expected, so we are happy about that," said Miller.

Miller says that IDOT owes a great deal of thanks to drivers for heeding warnings to avoid the area.

Due to that cooperation, some good weather, and the speed of that construction crews, there is only some demolition clean up and lane striping left, so there will be no need for lane closures next weekend.

Construction began at 10 p.m. Friday and was originally scheduled to be completed by 5 a.m. Monday.
