Second Suspect Charged In Murder Of Former Mount Carmel Star

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A second man has been charged in connection with the September murder of a former Mount Carmel star athlete outside a West Loop club.

Deangelo Green, 31, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, according to Chicago Police.

Lavell Southern, 23, and his 23-year-old friend were leaving the club in the 1100 block of West Randolph after a birthday party about 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 6 when they encountered several men, according to police and prosecutors.

A fight broke out, and Southern was apparently trying to break up the fight when Green and 32-year-old Andre Harris opened fire, authorities said.

Southern was shot in the back and head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His friend was shot in the arm and was treated for the wound.

Southern was a star football and basketball player at Mount Carmel High School, according to his family. Southern, the son of a pastor, went on to play at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Green, of the 7100 block of South Seeley, is scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday, according to police. Harris was previously charged in September and is being held without bond at the Cook County jail.
