CBS 2 School Spotlight: Leo High School

CHICAGO (CBS)-- This week's School Spotlight takes a look inside Leo High School in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Principal Shaka Rawls is a graduate of Leo High School and he came back to help revive the school.

"I'm in my eighth year here at Leo High School and I think what we've seen is how the community has supported us, our alumni is stronger than ever in supporting the work that we do, there's been a little bit of good luck and a lot of hard work," Rawls said. "It's an amazing place to be every single day."

CBS 2's Darius Johnson also visited the school where students and teachers got into the academic spirit. A group of students combined knowledge of Black History Month and chemistry's periodic table.

The school boasts several state track championships -- but no track? An incredible achievement and the team's coach gives credit to the students' determination to succeed.

The school's basketball coach stresses that they have strong athletic teams but academics come first for the students and their instructors.

Leo High School's alumni are actively involved in keeping school spirit alive not only in the school but out in the community.

The South Side school is not only rich with history, but it also has an incredible story of perseverance. It's making a comeback when enrollment started to decline.

Now Leo High School is thriving!
