Two killed, two injured when SUV hits back of school bus in Kane County

School bus, Lexus involved in deadly accident in Kane County

CAMPTON HILLS, Ill. (CBS) -- Two people were killed when a sport-utility vehicle hit the back of a school bus in unincorporated Kane County Monday afternoon.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said at 3:45 p.m., Sheriff's deputies and Campton Hills police officers were called to the scene on Empire Road near Kingswood Drive in unincorporated Campton Township.

A 2013 Lexus SUV was headed east on Empire Road when it slammed into the back of a school bus, Hain said. The school bus had 24 students and one bus driver on board at the time.

One man and woman in the SUV were dead at the scene, Hain said. Another man and woman were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva with serious injuries.

The school bus was from Central Community Unit School District #301, and the students attended Lily Lake Elementary. The bus driver -- a 68-year-old Campton Hills man -- and the students were uninjured, Hain said.

The school district released the following statement:

"More than 30 students were on their way home from school Monday when their school bus was struck by a car along Empire Road. Our bus riders were treated and released on scene to their parents by emergency responders and administrative staff.  We are thankful for our parents' calm, patient and cooperative response as we worked together to release their children from the scene. We are making support staff available to students and staff throughout the day on Tuesday to offer accommodations as they need it."

At the scene, the wrecked SUV was seen off in the grass alongside the roadway. The bus remained in the road and did not appear significantly damaged.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation late Monday.
