Schaumburg Police Warn Of Serial Burglars
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in northwest suburban Schaumburg said neighbors who didn't call 911 let a couple of serial burglars get away.
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports seven units in two Schaumburg apartment buildings have been burglarized since last month.
Schaumburg Police Sgt. John Nebl said the thefts have occurred during daytime hours, when the occupants were not home.
"The offenders generally enter the building through the common door, or actually force open the common door, and then they use some type of a pry tool to attack the deadbolt, compromising the deadbolt and the doorframe to gain entry into the apartment," he said.
The burglars have gotten away with expensive electronics; including TVs, computers, and game consoles.
Detectives who canvassed the buildings after the burglaries found at least two neighbors who heard or saw something suspicious, but didn't call 911.
"Neither one of them called the Schaumburg Police, and didn't pay attention to it until we knocked on the door later to see if they knew that a burglary had occurred," Nebl said.
If the neighbors had called, Nebl said police might have been able to catch the thieves in the act.
