7 Injured, Including Firefighter, In Schaumburg Apartment Building Fire

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A fire broke out at an apartment building in Schaumburg early Saturday morning, injuring several people and displacing a dozen residents.

Firefighters responded to a building in the 100 block of Salado Court just before 1:30 a.m and discovered flames and smoke coming from the first floor, according to Schaumburg police.

Two residents were trapped on the third floor of the building and jumped from a window. Both were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and remain in the hospital with serious injuries. Police say another resident and a Schaumburg firefighter were also taken to St. Alexius for minor injuries and have been released.

Three other residents were treated by paramedics on scene.

The fire caused extensive damage to the 12-unit building, leaving it uninhabitable. A nearby building was also heavily damaged by smoke, police say.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
