Salvation Army Hosts Sober Super Bowl Party
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's one Super Bowl party where everyone could be the designated driver. WBBM's Nancy Harty explains.
For over ten years, the Salvation Army has been hosting a sober Super Bowl party at its Harbor Light Center on Chicago's Near West Side.
Captain Nancy Powers says the event has grown to include upwards of 300 people and is the biggest such party around.
"Believe it or not, it is possible to have a wonderful time sober," said Powers.
She says watching the game is fun, but with all of the hoopla and beer commercials can be a problem for people going through recovery.
"It is an extreme trigger for folks to drink," said Powers.
Their clients are grateful for the communal experience.
"I'll probably have one-to-two dozen clients tell me this is the first time I have ever watched the Super Bowl game sober," said Powers.
