Run Kicks Off City's Pride Festivities

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Supreme Court's historic ruling coincided with the city's Pride festivities.

Organizers expect the crowds to be bigger and even more jubilant that anticipated.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports the Proud To Run 10K run & 5K run/walk starting at Montrose Harbor kicked off celebrations ahead of Sunday's Pride Parade.

A parade organizer said Friday's ruling couldn't have come at a better time.

It was estimated more than a million attended the 2014 Pride Parade. The city estimates a similar number for this year's celebration -- but that was before Friday's ruling.

If the weather is clear, the thought is crowds will surpass that number.

An organizer says both the parade and city are prepared for that.

He adds you can expect lots of barricades and several hundred officers helping to control crowds during the 21-block parade route -- through Lake View and Uptown.

"I think the excitement level is going to be juiced up even more than normal," said Barry Love. "I have been coming for so many years and it is just a fun part of pride."

An organizer warns those drinking open beer or liquor on the sidewalks. could receive tickets as high $1,000.

The money from the run helps LGBTQ related causes.
