Round 3: Dold And Schneider Face Off In 10th District Again

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The race for Congress in Illinois' 10th District has roots that go way back. Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Dold and Democratic challenger Brad Schneider have faced off before, and the battle is no less intense the third time around.

Dold won the seat in 2010, defeating Democrat Dan Seals in an open race after incumbent Mark Kirk moved to the Senate.

In 2012, Schneider defeated Dold, but Dold reclaimed the seat two years later.

With the two facing off a third time, the race is neck and neck.

Schneider voted in Highland Park around 7 a.m., with his wife and son at his side.

"We know if our voters come out, and go to the polls, we're going to win this election. As I said, there's a lot of excitement. We've had hundreds of people knocking on doors all summer into the fall; and in this past weekend we were knocking on doors, making calls, and making sure everyone voted," he said.

About 11 miles north of Highland Park, Dold stepped out of his campaign bus to greet voters Tuesday morning at Liberty Restaurant in Libertyville. He said he plans to vote near his Kenilworth home Tuesday afternoon. He said he isn't worried about party allegiance hurting his chances in a presidential election year, when Democrats typically do better in Illinois.

"This district is a very unique district. In fact, what makes it so fantastic is that they actually vote for the candidate. They take a look at those records, which is one of the things that I think is fantastic. It's the reason why John McCain lost the 10th District by 26 and Mark Kirk won it by 5, so my hope is that they go in and take a look at our record," he said.

Both candidates said they plan to make calls and shake hands up until the final hour.
