Robber Crashes Jaguar After Fleeing South Loop Mariano's

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Police said a man crashed a newer model Jaguar after robbing a Mariano's Fresh Market in the South Loop Tuesday night.

The store - located at 1615 S. Clark St. - is less than a quarter-mile from the Central District Chicago Police Station.

The 20-year-old - posing as a nightshift crew worker - was inside the store and attempting to steal money from the cash registers, police said. A loss prevention employee recognized the man from a separate robbery that occurred at a different Mariano's store and began chasing after him.

The suspect then ran out of the store and jumped into a Jaguar, only to crash it into a building across the store's parking lot at 1601 S. Federal St., police said. He then exited the vehicle but was soon tackled by the loss prevention employee, who held him down until officers arrived. He was taken into custody about 11:30 p.m., according to police.

The suspect might be a current or former employee at a different Mariano's store, police added.

According to a police, there are numerous surveillance cameras around the store and crime scene. Charges are pending as Area Central detectives investigate.
