Returning Combat Vets Will Get First License Plate Renewal For Free Under New Law

(CBS) -- Men and women returning from the battlefield are about to get some help with their cars from the state of Illinois, reports WBBM's Cisco Cotto.

Returning combat veterans will get their first license plate renewal for free under a bill signed into law by the governor.

State Senator Neil Anderson of Moline sponsored the bill. He works as a firefighter with several veterans.

"They all talk about the struggle financially of coming back," Anderson said. "They were over there, they had the stuff that they needed but when they come back to civilian life, it's a whole different world for them. This is just one less thing that they have to worry about."

All returning combat veterans will have to do is show their discharge papers at the DMV. The program begins in January of 2017.
