Residents Complain The City Has Forgotten Their Frozen Alley
(CBS) -- They are typically the last areas in Chicago to be plowed: alleyways.
But with each snowfall, Chicagoans are becoming stranded.
Like Ms. Knight of North Kenwood.
She's a senior citizen and has had her vehicle stuck twice in the alley. The alley has razor-sharp tire tracks cut out of a glacier, with broken car bits and marooned cars.
"I'm disgusted as hell. This makes no sense," she tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards.
Says another resident, Toi Walker-Smith: "I was stuck a week ago for a total of three hours."
Then it was tow time for Vietnam veteran Fred Furgeson.
"It cost me $70 just to pick it up off that ice and snow. They haven't hit this alley at all, not one time," he says.
Ms. Knight, recently widowed after 50-plus years of marriage, is tired of fighting for a clear alley.
"I'm heart-broken, disgusted and everything," she says.
The alderman's office says the ward is looking for an alternative solution for the alley and is working with Streets and Sanitation.
