Officer Saves Woman Whose Car Went Into Pond At College Of DuPage

(CBS) -- A Glen Ellyn police officer is credited with saving the life of a 61-year-old woman who was found unconscious in a submerged vehicle on the College of DuPage campus Friday evening.

First-responders were alerted to a car in a retention pond next to the MAC Center along Fawell Boulevard around 8 p.m., Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Chief Keith Krestan said.

A Glen Ellyn police officer swam 30 yards to the car, which was mostly submerged, and found an unconscious woman inside, the police department said in a news release. The officer was able to pull the woman onto the roof of the car, where she regained consciousness. Firefighters then got the officer and woman to shore.

Police Chief Philip Norton says the officer's actions "undoubtedly saved the woman's life." He also praised firefighters for their efforts.

Both the officer and the motorist were taken to local hospitals, and the officer was released a short time later.

No additional information was available about the woman.
