Cubs Hire Dave Martinez As Bench Coach

(CBS) The Cubs have hired Dave Martinez onto manager Joe Maddon's staff, where he will serve as bench coach as he did under Maddon for seven seasons in Tampa Bay.

The Rays didn't select the 50-year-old Martinez as a finalist as they search for a new manager. Martinez interviewed for the Cubs' managerial job in 2013 before the Cubs chose Rick Renteria, who managed just one season before being fired to make room for Maddon's hiring that became official in early November.

As a player, Martinez came up in the Cubs' farm system and played in Chicago from 1986-'88 and again in 2000.

Brandon Hyde was set to be the Cubs' bench coach previously, but he's now been reassigned to be the team's first-base coach. After previously being named the first-base coach in October, Doug Dascenzo has been reassigned to be an outfield and baserunning coordinator with responsibilities in the major and minor leagues.

Additionally, Henry Blanco has been named the club's major league quality assurance coach.
