Man Taken Into Custody, Two Kids Safe After Hostage Situation On Cicero Avenue

(CBS) -- A man holding two children inside a semi-truck on Cicero Avenue has been taken into custody following a standoff with police from Chicago and Bedford Park Monday afternoon.

The man had two children and two dogs with him inside the semi-truck near 43rd and Cicero on Chicago's Southwest Side. Chicago Police say that no weapon was involved.

Bedford Park Police say they received a call from a woman at 1:22 p.m. saying that she and her two children and two dogs were being held by the woman's husband in the cab of a semi-truck in the 6500 block of 73rd Street in Bedford Park.

Police say the man tried to hit officers with the truck and then led them on a short chase which ended at the 4400 block of Cicero Ave. in Chicago. The woman managed to escape prior to the chase.

The man was persuaded by police to release the two children and two dogs before he exited the vehicle without incident. Both of the children and the two dogs were unharmed.

Bedford Park Police say charges against the man are pending.

Cicero Avenue has reopened after being closed between 43rd and 47th streets. The Cicero exit and entrance ramps on I-55 near Midway Airport were closed but have been reopened, according to Illinois State Police.
