Report: Support Growing In NFL To Add Two Playoff Teams In 2015

(CBS) The NFL playoff field could expand by two teams, from 12 to 14, as soon as 2015, the Washington Post reported.

There's growing support for such a move, with the Post writing that the chances "are increasing that the franchise owners will consider and potentially vote on such a proposal when they meet next month, according to several people familiar with the deliberations on the issue."

"There's a lot of momentum for it," an anonymous source told the Post. "I don't know for sure if the votes are there yet (among the owners) or not. But there is momentum. A lot of people seem in favor of it."

If one team per conference is added to the playoffs, only the top seed would receive a bye, and six playoff games would be played in the wild-card round. The Post reported that the NFL "seems to favor" splitting those six games over three days, with two on Saturday, three on Sunday and one on Monday.

The NFL's competition committee has been studying the possibility of adding one playoff team in each conference.
