Report: Kane, Toews Want To Sign Extensions Together
(CBS) Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews want to sign contract extensions together this summer to remain in Chicago long term, and their shared agent is continuing negotiations with the team, the Chicago Tribune reported late Monday.
Toews told the Tribune that the duo wants stay in Chicago "for as long as we possibly can be — hopefully our entire careers. That's the priority right there." He added it's "very doubtful" when asked if there was any scenario in which he wouldn't re-sign with the Blackhawks.
Both Kane and Toews have one year left on their contracts, and the extensions that are being worked out would kick in for the 2015-'16 season. Agent Pat Brisson has been negotiating on behalf of both Kane and Toews already, Toews said.
"We're in discussions right now, but as far as I know nothing is concrete," Toews told the Tribune. "We'll see where it continues to go. (General manager) Stan (Bowman) probably has a lot on his docket as the manager of our team so he's trying to get things done. Kaner and I will take it slow and make the right decision."
Kane, 25, and Toews, 26, signed identical five-year deals worth $31.5 million midway through the 2009-'10 season.
The duo entered the NHL together in 2007-'08, and the Blackhawks have had remarkable success with them as cornerstones. Chicago has won the Stanley Cup twice and advanced to the Western Conference Finals four times since 2010.
Bowman has called re-signing the duo the team's "highest priority."
